Ravi Raaz, from Mahuli village in Nawada district, Bihar, ranked 20th in CSE 2025, on his fifth attempt. He is visually impaired, and his family farms.
He is the first in his family to sit the exam. His fourth attempt gave him AIR 182 and the Indian Revenue Service, and he kept preparing for another attempt. He has said: "My parents are the real architects of this achievement."

He relied on audio lectures and digital resources. His mother sat beside him, reading newspapers, books and study material aloud. For answer practice, he dictated and she wrote. He watched YouTube lectures for CSAT and Geography. For ethics, a Telegram mentorship group sent him feedback as voice notes.
On AI: "AI can make some things easier, but it cannot replace books." On working within limits: "We can either complain or work around the challenge."
He cleared prelims on his first try but not Mains. He did not clear prelims on his second or third. His fourth gave AIR 182, and his fifth gave AIR 20. He also cleared the BPSC exam on his third try, and declined the post because "I was certain that if I prepared sincerely, I would still be somewhere better."
He sat three interviews: once for BPSC and twice for UPSC. The UPSC questions covered his hometown, current affairs, his service and case studies. He said they needed calm thinking, not memorised answers.
