Anuj Agnihotri hails from Rawatbhata, a small town in the Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan, where his father works at the Rajasthan Atomic Power Plant. He completed his Class 10 at Atomic Energy Central School in Rawatbhata and his Class 12 at M.B. Public Senior Secondary School in Kota before securing admission to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jodhpur, where he earned his MBBS degree in 2023. Despite having a promising medical career ahead of him, Anuj chose to pursue civil services, driven by his mother’s inspiration and a genuine desire to serve people at a broader systemic level. His journey from medicine to public administration took a significant step forward when he cleared the Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Civil Service (DANICS) examination and served as a Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) probationer in Delhi, gaining firsthand administrative experience even as he continued his UPSC preparation. Anuj secured All India Rank 1 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2025 with a total of 1071 marks out of 2025 — the highest topper score since Anudeep Durishetty’s 1126 in 2017. His achievement is historically significant as only the second time in 15 years that a doctor with Medical Science optional has topped the UPSC CSE, following Dr. Shena Aggarwal (AIR 1, 2011).

Anuj began his UPSC preparation during his MBBS internship at AIIMS Jodhpur, building conceptual clarity through NCERT books and standard references while integrating preparation into his medical education schedule. Over six years and multiple attempts, he iteratively refined his strategy — treating each attempt not as a failure but as a data point for improvement. By the time of his final UPSC cycle, he was simultaneously serving as a DANICS probationer SDM in Delhi, which enriched his understanding of governance.
Anuj chose Medical Science as his optional, aligned with his MBBS from AIIMS Jodhpur. He scored 142 in Paper I and 150 in Paper II (292/500). His approach relied on deep existing knowledge from his medical curriculum rather than extra books, supplemented by clinical textbooks (Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine, Park’s Textbook of Preventive & Social Medicine, Gray’s Anatomy) and previous year optional papers for exam pattern familiarisation. His medical knowledge also enriched his GS answers on public health, epidemiology, and biotechnology.
Anuj practised writing 2–3 structured Mains answers daily, focusing on multidimensional analysis (historical, constitutional, economic, social, international angles). He emphasised structure over information: clear introductions, well-organised body paragraphs with subheadings where appropriate, and balanced conclusions. He used diagrams, flowcharts, and tables selectively for clarity and disciplined word limit adherence.
Anuj enrolled in the Interview Guidance Program (IGP) at Legacy IAS Academy, Bengaluru, receiving structured mock interviews under board-like conditions, detailed DAF (Detailed Application Form) analysis covering every aspect of his background (AIIMS, DANICS, Rajasthan roots, Medical Science optional), personality assessment and feedback, current affairs discussion sessions, and communication skill development. His interview score of 204/275 (74.2%) — 11 marks higher than AIR 3 — was instrumental in the 4-mark margin that separated him from AIR 2.
He also took the Current Affairs Value Addition (CA-VA) course at NEXT IAS.
Anuj studied approximately 13 hours daily while serving as a DANICS probationer:
“Do not confuse yourself by referring to too many sources. Stick to standard study material like NCERT Books and revise from them.” He focused on fewer, better sources with multiple revision cycles rather than wide but shallow reading.
Anuj secured AIR 1 in his 3rd attempt (UPSC-specific). Before topping, he had already cleared DANICS and was serving as an SDM.
